This Week in the News

This week's throughline is capital and market position moving at the same time. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA)'s second Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) round and a fresh Oregon award show real money reaching networks, but SpaceX's push to sunset the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)'s rural High-Cost Fund is a direct threat to the subsidy base many independent networks are built on, and Comcast and Verizon are both leaning harder into the rural and secondary markets independents have long called their own. Add a major fixed wireless equipment vendor's collapse and two critical vulnerabilities in widely deployed edge hardware, and this is a week to update your funding assumptions, vendor risk list and patch queue all at once.

🏛️Policy & Regulatory

SpaceX Asks the FCC to Wind Down the $4.5 Billion Rural Broadband Subsidy Fund

SpaceX filed comments urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to sunset its High-Cost program, arguing that Starlink and other unsubsidized satellite services have made rural broadband "effectively universally available." NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association, USTelecom, the Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (WISPA) and the National Tribal Telecommunications Association pushed back, arguing satellite cannot match the reliability, capacity and affordability standards required for universal service.

Why This Matters Many independent and rural providers depend on High-Cost support to keep networks financially viable in low-density markets. If the FCC moves toward winding the fund down, start modeling revenue scenarios now and get engaged in the comment process rather than waiting for a final order.

FCC Set to Vote September 30 on a Permitting Overhaul That Could Cut Billions in Deployment Costs

The FCC will vote September 30 on an order narrowing which broadband and wireless projects trigger National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review, potentially exempting more than 14,800 wireless deployments from current environmental checklists. Commission analysis estimates the current rules generate $2.2 billion in direct compliance costs and at least $7.5 billion in lost economic activity between 2025 and 2035.

Why This Matters Faster, cheaper permitting directly affects how quickly independent providers can build and how much capital gets tied up in review cycles. If you have active buildout plans, watch this vote closely and factor a favorable outcome into 2027 construction timelines.

💰Funding & Grants

NTIA Opens a Second BEAD Funding Round Using $21 Billion in Program Savings

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced that states can now apply supplemental Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program funding, drawn from roughly $21 billion in savings generated under Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's "Benefit of the Bargain" reforms, to reach locations that were defaulted on, wrongly removed during earlier challenge processes or newly identified in updated FCC maps. States get 30 days to review new eligible location lists before a shortened challenge process and a new round of deployment plan submissions.

Why This Matters This is a fresh shot at capital for providers whose service areas were left out or undercounted in the first BEAD round. Check your state's updated eligible location list now and prepare challenge documentation before the 30-day window closes.

Douglas Fast Net Confirms a $31.6 Million BEAD Award for an Oregon Fiber Build

Oregon-based Douglas Fast Net secured a $31.6 million BEAD award, combined with $10.4 million of its own matching funds, to bring fiber to roughly 4,490 homes across Douglas, Coos and Lane counties. CEO Todd Way said the award lets the 25-year-old provider keep "building fiber and connecting" rural Oregon communities.

Why This Matters It is proof that BEAD dollars are now converting into signed awards for independent providers rather than sitting in state-level planning documents. Benchmark your own state's award pace and match requirements against this deal.

🌐Network Technology

Cambium Networks, a Major Fixed Wireless Equipment Vendor, Collapses After Nasdaq Delisting

Cambium Networks, whose Point-to-Multipoint (PMP) and cnWave radios are widely deployed by U.S. Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs), effectively shut down this month. Its Nasdaq delisting appeal was denied on August 25, its U.S. operations ceased on September 11 and its U.K. subsidiary filed for administration, a UK insolvency process, the day before. Deployed hardware keeps working, but the future of the free cnMaestro cloud management platform is uncertain, and operators are already discussing migration paths to alternatives such as Tarana for Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) point-to-multipoint or Ceragon and Aviat for point-to-point links.

Why This Matters If you run Cambium gear, treat this as a vendor risk event now, not later. Map your Cambium footprint, back up cnMaestro configurations and start evaluating alternative vendors before support options narrow further.

Ziply Fiber Completes a Redundant Fiber Ring to Serve Washington's Data Center Boom

Ziply Fiber finished a redundant fiber ring in Quincy, Washington, giving hyperscale and Artificial Intelligence (AI) data center operators path-diverse, carrier-grade dark fiber connectivity in one of the country's fastest-growing data center hubs. General Manager of Commercial Chris Gellos said the ring gives operators "the path diversity and reliability that AI infrastructure demands."

Why This Matters As AI-driven data center demand spreads into secondary and rural markets, providers with existing long-haul fiber assets have a new, high-margin wholesale opportunity worth weighing alongside core residential and business broadband plans.

🤝M&A & Market Activity

Clearwave Fiber and Visionary Broadband Agree to Combine Into a 17 State Platform

Clearwave Fiber, which already includes Point Broadband, signed an agreement to combine with Visionary Broadband, creating a fiber and fixed wireless platform serving roughly 700,000 addresses across 17 states in the Southeast, Midwest and West. Clearwave CEO David Armistead will lead the combined company while Visionary CEO Brian Worthen focuses on western expansion, with backers GTCR and Berkshire Partners continuing to support growth.

Why This Matters This is Clearwave's second major roll up in 2026 and a reminder that scale is becoming a competitive necessity for independent operators. If you have not had a serious conversation about your own consolidation strategy this year, this deal is a good prompt to start one.

🔒Cybersecurity

Critical Flaw in Cisco Nexus 9000 Switches Allows Root Access Without a Password

Cisco disclosed CVE-2026-20212, a critical flaw carrying a Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) severity score of 9.8 out of 10, affecting ten Silicon One-based Nexus 9000 switch models across 45 NX-OS software releases. The flaw lets an unauthenticated remote attacker execute code as root through two unrestricted network ports, and Cisco has published temporary mitigations while it prepares a permanent patch.

Why This Matters Nexus 9000 switches sit in many regional network cores. If you run this hardware, apply Cisco's interim access control list mitigations immediately rather than waiting for a permanent patch, since this vulnerability requires no credentials to exploit.

CISA Orders Federal Agencies to Patch Actively Exploited Cisco, Citrix and Fortinet Flaws

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added three actively exploited vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, an authentication bypass in Cisco's Firewall Management Center, an authentication bypass in Citrix NetScaler and a buffer overflow in Fortinet's FortiOS, and set a September 12 patch deadline for federal agencies. The Fortinet flaw alone has already been used to push ransomware-like malware to more than 3,000 IP addresses.

Why This Matters These are exactly the internet-facing firewalls, VPN gateways and remote access appliances that regional providers run at their network edge. Confirm your patch status on all three platforms this week even though the federal deadline does not technically apply to you.

📊Competitive Landscape

AT&T Sues Charter Over "Fiber-Powered" Advertising for Its Coaxial Cable Network

AT&T filed suit against Charter, arguing that Spectrum's "fiber-powered Internet" branding misleads consumers into believing they are getting end-to-end fiber when most of the network still runs on hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) technology with copper delivering the final connection. Charter maintains its disclaimers make the distinction clear between "100% Fiber Internet" and "Fiber-Powered Internet."

Why This Matters This fight over what legally counts as fiber will shape how every provider markets network technology going forward. Review your own advertising claims for the same scrutiny before a competitor or regulator does it for you.

Comcast and Charter Shares Sink as T-Mobile's Fixed Wireless Offensive Squeezes Cable Pricing

Comcast fell 8% and Charter fell 6% in a single trading session, reflecting investor concern over deteriorating cable broadband fundamentals: Comcast's domestic broadband revenue dropped 5.5% year over year and Charter's internet revenue declined 3.2% amid accelerating subscriber losses. Analysts point to T-Mobile's fixed wireless service, now delivering speeds more than 50% faster than a year ago, as a structural driver of the pricing pressure.

Why This Matters When the two largest cable operators are visibly on the defensive against wireless competition, independent fiber providers in overlapping footprints have a real opening on speed and reliability messaging, but should expect more aggressive promotional pricing from cable incumbents defending share.

📡Tier-1 Watch

Verizon Locks In a Multibillion-Dollar Fiber Supply Deal With Corning Through 2032

Verizon and Corning signed a multiyear agreement for more than 80 million miles of fiber cable from 2027 through 2032, which Verizon says secures the supply chain certainty it needs to grow its fiber footprint to between 40 million and 50 million passings and expand long-haul routes for AI data center connectivity. Neither company disclosed exact financial terms.

Why This Matters Verizon is locking up fiber cable supply years in advance, which could tighten availability and raise costs for independent providers competing for the same materials. Review your own fiber procurement contracts and lead times now rather than after a shortage hits.

Comcast Pushes a Multi-Year Broadband Build Into Unserved Areas of Michigan, Utah, Indiana and Ohio

Comcast is extending its network into unserved and underserved communities across four states, including a Jackson County, Michigan project that is more than half complete, as part of a multi-year strategy built on next-generation Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 4.0 upgrades and gig-speed service. The company is framing the buildout as market expansion rather than share-taking, paired with bundled mobile, internet and home service offers designed to reduce churn.

Why This Matters Comcast entering unserved territory in secondary markets puts it in direct competition with independent providers on their own home turf, often the exact areas BEAD and other subsidies were designed to reach. Confirm whether your planned service areas overlap with Comcast's build map before finalizing your own construction schedule.

📣Who's in the News

On the vendor side, Nokia and Microsoft unveiled a joint platform combining Nokia Data Suite with Microsoft Fabric to cut the time operators need to prepare network data for Artificial Intelligence-driven automation from weeks to minutes, targeting predictive maintenance and automated issue detection across multi-vendor networks. Corning confirmed it will supply Verizon with more than 80 million miles of fiber cable through 2032 under the carrier's new supply agreement, underscoring how tight fiber cable capacity may get as demand from broadband and AI data center buildouts both accelerate at once. Ribbon Communications expanded its critical infrastructure router lineup with two new models adding quantum-safe security and grid-synchronization features aimed at utilities modernizing legacy networks onto Internet Protocol (IP) architecture, a customer base that overlaps with many rural broadband providers' own service territories. And Calix brought on former SAP and ServiceNow marketing executive Juergen Lindner as its new marketing chief, a move the company frames as accelerating adoption of its AI-native Calix One platform among service provider customers. Taken together, the moves point to vendors racing to embed AI deeper into network operations while also competing hard for the raw materials, fiber, chips and switching capacity, that any buildout still requires.
